中歐時間2022年12月31日上午9時34分（UTC+01:00）[1]，前教宗本篤十六世在梵蒂岡教會之母修道院逝世[2]。當局宣布他的遺體將於2023年1月2日移靈至聖伯多祿大殿供人民瞻仰，葬禮也已經開始籌備[3]。在他逝世前，教宗方濟各已在12月28日的一份聲明中暗示本篤十六世的健康狀況惡化，他在聲明中表示他「病得很重」，並懇求人們為他祈禱[4]。他的去世標誌著羅馬天主教歷史上一個特殊時刻的終結：由於本篤十六世在2013年罕見辭職，彼時世界上同時存在兩個教宗[5]。

中歐時間2013年2月28日下午八時，本篤十六世辭任教宗，是為額我略十二世辭任六個世紀後首位辭去教宗職務的人[6]暨是1296年教宗策肋定五世退隱以來第一位自願辭職的人[7][8][9]。辭任後，他在羅馬度過餘生。

關於本篤十六世健康狀況惡化的報導可以追溯到2017年。當年10月和11月，他與彼得·西瓦爾德和帕紹主教斯特凡·奧斯特的合照在臉書上流傳。圖片顯示本篤十六世有一隻黑眼圈。在圖片發表前一周，他在家中滑倒，身上出現了血腫[10][11]。這在幾周前就已經出現在針對前教宗健康狀況的猜測中[10]。

2020年7月1日，本篤的哥哥喬治·拉青格在本篤十六世於6月探望他後不久便與世長辭[12][13]。

2020年8月3日，繼西瓦爾德於8月1日來訪後德國媒體紛紛對本篤十六世的健康狀況進行猜測，本篤的助手透露他患有三叉神經痛，但表示他的病情並不嚴重[14]。馬爾他紅衣主教馬里奧·格雷奇於2020年12月2日向《梵蒂岡新聞》稱，本篤十六世在講話時遇到了嚴重的困難，據報導他向紅衣主教長老會說：「上帝取走了我的聲音，以便讓我欣賞沉默」[15]。

儘管身體每況愈下，本篤十六世還是在2020年9月4日以93年4個月零16天的高壽超過良十三世（1903年逝世），成為最長壽的教宗[16]。

2022年12月，教宗方濟各對外宣布本篤十六世「病重」的消息。方濟各沒有透露本篤十六世所患的疾病，但呼籲人們為他祈禱[17]。當天晚些時候，聖座新聞辦公室的馬泰奧·布魯尼也提及到本篤的病，將病因歸咎於「年邁」並透露他正在接受醫療監督[18]，以及方濟各前往本篤十六世所在的教會之母修道院之事宜[19]。

12月29日，布魯尼報導稱本篤十六世的情況仍極其嚴重，但頭腦依然清醒[20]。次日，本篤十六世現身於一場彌撒慶典，舉辦地點在其臥室，其身體狀況仍較穩定[21]。當日，羅馬拉特朗聖若望大殿為本篤十六世舉辦了一場特別彌撒.[22]。

教宗本篤十六世於中歐時間2022年12月31日上午九時三十四分在其位於教會之母修道院的私人住所逝世，終年95歲[23]。

同日，教廷公開了本篤十六世於2006年8月29日寫下的精神遺囑，而該文件直到他逝世後才被公眾所知[24][25]。秘書、密友喬治-甘斯韋恩表示，本篤十六世的遺言是「耶穌，我愛你！」（德語：Jesus, ich liebe dich!）[26]。

同日，教宗方濟各首次就本篤十六世去世發言，並對其作出稱讚[27]。

梵蒂岡對在任教宗逝世至葬禮期間和之後發生的事情有嚴格的程序[28]。由於缺乏先例，再者本篤十六世的死因尚不明確，梵蒂岡最初表示將在他死後的幾個小時內公布葬禮計劃，此外還表示他的遺體將於2023年1月2日移靈至聖伯多祿大殿[3]。馬泰奧·布魯尼還透露葬禮將於1月5日舉行，並由教宗方濟各監督[29][3]。梵蒂岡方面僅邀請了德國及義大利政府的官方代表團[30]。由於本篤十六世非在任教宗，故其遺體並未佩戴披帶及攜帶教宗權杖[31]。

12月31日，教廷宣布本篤十六世的遺體將埋葬在聖伯多祿大殿下方的一個地下室中[32]，即本篤十六世的前任聖若望·保祿二世首次下葬的墓穴中，按照其遺願下葬於此。

1月1日（即元旦及聖誕節後的第八天），本篤十六世的遺體移靈至教會之母修道院內的私人教堂內[33]。5日舉行葬禮，安葬於聖伯多祿大殿地下室的教宗墓地。

1月2日早上，本篤十六世的遺體被遷移至聖伯多祿大殿，並陳列（英語：Lying in state）三天[34]。據聖座新聞辦公室表示，陳列期間約有195,000人到場悼念[35]。4日晚間，本篤十六世的面部被蓋上白布，在將其在位時所使用的物件放到遺體旁後，棺材正式閉合[36]。

葬禮彌撒的計劃書於1月3日公布[37]。馬泰奧·布魯尼於彌撒開始前透露，此次彌撒的各個環節與常規禮拜儀式（英語：Church service）大致相同，只是將適用於在任教宗的部分用其他方式代替[38]。為了和先前的教宗葬禮區分，教廷決定以感恩經（英語：Anaphora (liturgy)）作為本篤十六世的祭文，而不採用此前使用的羅馬經文（英語：Canon of the Mass）[39]。

葬禮被定於5日09:30左右在聖伯多祿廣場開始[40]，由繼任教宗方濟各主持[41]，西斯汀小堂合唱團（英語：Sistine Chapel Choir）負責葬禮音樂，樞機團團長若翰·雷負責聖餐禮相關事宜[42]。此次葬禮約有50,000參加[43]，其中有部分參與者要求儘快封聖[44]。根據本篤十六世的遺囑，該次葬禮的規模比一般的教宗葬禮較小[45]。

教宗方濟各在彌撒儀式上根據福音書上的部分章節作出了簡短的布道（英語：Homily），並對本篤十六世的一生表示稱讚。有評論人士以此與本篤十六世在若望保祿二世的葬禮（英語：Death and funeral of Pope John Paul II）上所作的更具讚美意味的布道進行對比[46][45]。

在此次葬禮之前，首次有教宗參與籌辦前任教宗的葬禮是在1802年，當時於1799年在法國逝世的庇護六世的遺體被帶回羅馬，時任教宗庇護七世出席了他的葬禮[46][47]。

葬禮結束後，本篤十六世被正式葬在聖伯多祿大殿的地下室內，而若望保祿二世自2005年去世後也曾一度葬在同一地點，直到2011受福（英語：Beatification of Pope John Paul II）後遷離.[48][46]。根據過往傳統，本篤十六世的絲柏（英語：Cypress）制棺材被放置在鋅制棺材中，而鋅製棺材又由橡木外棺包裹[36]。2023年1月8日始，墳墓開放公眾參觀[49]。

1月31日，梵蒂岡發行了本篤十六世的紀念郵票[50]。

為遵守本篤十六世簡辦葬禮的要求，梵蒂岡僅邀請了義大利及德國政要派遣代表團[51]，而其他國家亦可派代表以私人名義參加[52]。這一決定受到葡萄牙總統馬塞洛·雷貝洛·德索薩批評，他表示自己只會代表國家而不會以私人名義前往[53]。
