世界主要宗教在20世纪根据比较宗教学的研究，依照其基本哲学观念和神学范畴来分类，但对于如何划分宗教信仰人群，尚有许多问题没有完全解决，包括：
- 是否只根据“历史上占统治地位的宗教文化”统计[1]
- 是否只根据“实践”某一种宗教的人群统计[2]
- 是否只根据确实对某一种宗教真正“忠诚信仰”的人群统计[3]
- 是否只统计自己表示信仰某一种宗教的人群[4]
- 是否只统计成人，还是也包括儿童
- 是否只根据政府的统计结果[5]
- 是否只依据一种“最佳信息来源”还是根据多种来源综合分析
虽然基督教、伊斯兰教、印度教和佛教是目前世界上最大的几种宗教，但一般列举主要宗教仍然包括其他几种重要的宗教。

下表列出目前世界信仰主要宗教人数的基本情况，所列宗教并不完全，数据来源与统计，在没有统计数据的情况下如美国和法国，来源于随机调查，数据可能因为统计或调查的组织者而有所偏见。对于没有严格宗教组织的，如中国的道教或日本的神道教，则很难得到数据。有的宗教组织可能也会夸大他们的信徒人数。
