對佛教的批判，更像是一般對宗教的批判，可以從反對者或質疑斷言、信仰、許多佛教派別的其它因素中發現。一些佛教教派、許多佛教國家和獨立的佛教領導人已經以一種或其它方式批判。批評者來自不可知論的、懷疑者、反宗教主義、其它宗教的擁護人、佛教徒改革或僅是簡單的表達不喜歡。

与其他政教合一的国家一样，佛教在佛教国家里也无法避免地卷入政治冲突之中[1]，如中世纪的东南亚国家蒲甘王國，素可泰王国和波隆納魯沃區/古国。

批評者包括信仰佛教文化和習俗，這些批評對於原本的佛教徒操守，並非所有都是真的。[3]山姆·哈里斯著名的新無神論擁護者[4] 和佛學禪修者宣稱，修行者不適當的把佛教當作是宗教，並且他們的信仰通常是"天真、一廂情願和迷信的"，而這些阻止他們是真的佛教徒操守。[5]一些批評者宣稱佛教徒和領導人已經是唯物主義並且墮落於不當的財富和權力而不是追尋佛教操守。[6] 有許多已知的性醜聞和新興西方佛教徒群体的導師有關。[7]
